Drift Fishing
By: Miami Lures

There are many styles of fishing that anglers use to target different species of game fish. Bottom Fishing, Trolling, Surf Fishing, Pier fishing, Wade Fishing, etc. But, one of the best strategies for targeting a variety of game fish is Drift Fishing. How do you Drift Fish? Unlike other strategies Drift Fishing is simple; all it involves is getting your boat to your favorite spot, releasing some lines, and having some patience as you go with the flow of the water.

There are techniques that many experienced anglers use to increase the chance of getting a strike. The ideal position for a boat to drift would be sideways in relation to the wind. In this position your boat will drift slowly and when entering a potential strike zone such as reefs, underwater obstruction, wrecks, drop offs, etc. you will have more opportunities to drop more lines and reduce the chances of getting tangled in the obstructions. Another method to adjust your drift is to toss overboard a Sea Anchor. A Sea Anchor is basically a nylon parachute that opens underwater and creates drag. Depending on the wind condition and current condition the angler will have to tie the Sea Anchor on different positions of the boat to keep the boat's bow into the wind. It takes some practice to perfect the Drifting method as every boat is different.

What depth should you drift your baits? Every anglers have different preferences when it comes the depth of there bait. My favorite position is all of them. I always toss two lines straight to the bottom and as the boat drifts the baits are being dragged on the sea floor. This method works but it entangling in the rocks or obstruction is inevitable. I also toss two baits in the middle depth with weight and two more without weight on top. The top ones are usually my biggest live bait that I have. Another strategy is to chum the water as you drift as this alone will increase your chances dramatically.
